The few spectators still around late on Sunday afternoon were treated to a one-out-of-the-box final of the Women’s Championship Fours, when Paula Meredith’s team of Alison Colgate, Lynnie Campbell, and Gill Oliver faced June Wairau’s Lil George, Janet Nehemia and Merani Davis.
In the game of 18 ends, June took a solid lead of 14-7 with a six on the 10th. Paula came back with a five on the 15th, levelling the score at 16 all. Not to be outdone, June beat that with a seven on the next end, to take the lead back at 23-16. Paula clawed back a two on the 17th. At that point spectators heard Paul say, “We’ll just play them back.” (to the scoreboard end). She was joking, of course, because then, with a remarkable six, her team took the game 24-23.
Truly, a game worthy of a championship final anywhere.
